Functional Design
At 5974m Mount Alpamayo is an impressive peak in the Cordillera Blanco Range in Peru. Our first internal frame pack was tested on that mountain back in 1989. The Alpamayo is suitable for moderate length hiking trips, travel, or people with compact gear.
Ostrom specializes in simple top loading backpacks that are wide enough at the top to make packing easy. The absence of bells and whistles in the bag design means there are fewer things to break down in the field. Removable options e.g. front pocket, allow you to customize the pack to your intended use.
Comfortable Suspension System
Our suspension system, and the ability to fine tune the fit to your body shape, make our backpacks unique, and ultimately very comfortable.
Our shoulder straps and hip belt come in many sizes and are “gender neutral”. They are designed to wrap around any hip shape, and rest comfortably on shoulders of any size. This was supported by research and field testing with the Canadian Army, that indicated very little difference in the fitting issues between men and women. Comfort of an internal frame backpack was affected by the frame size and the ability to adjust the pack on the body with different sized hip belts and shoulder straps.
Volume:
(extended volume includes the snow cuff) Volume and Weight differs for each frame size. Determine your frame size by measuring your back length and adding 7”. (see “Measurement Instructions” on vertical navigation bar)

Suspension System - Basic Internal Frame Hiking
Frame(5 sizes): Rigid plastic framesheet with 2 aluminum stays – narrowing at the bottom for better hip mobility. A curved horizontal bar connects the 2 stays at the top to create headroom and to stabilize the load. Vertical stays can be removed and bent to the shape of your back.
Back Panel: Thermo-moulded back pad with ¾” deep ventilation channels. Lumbar Pad is thermo-moulded and pulls forward to expose the aluminum stays.
Shoulder Straps (5 sizes): S-shaped with an adjustable chest strap; they are ¾” thick, two layers, with a dense EVA foam top layer that prevents the packs from digging into your shoulders. A strap behind the neck helps fine tune the fit on slim shoulders and many women.
Hip Belt (4 sizes): Thermo-moulded hip belt wraps around the body without wrinkles or pressure points. 2 stabilizer straps shape it to your pelvis, providing a custom fit (REGARDLESS OF GENDER).
Ostrom Internal Frame Backpacks come in 5 different frame sizes determined by the length of your back. A frame that is too short will not transfer the load to your hips, resulting in a tired back. A frame that is too long will feel unbalanced. Our interchangeable shoulder straps and hip belt come in many sizes to ensure you get a pack that fits you perfectly.
We are one of the few backpack manufacturers that enable you to remove the aluminum stays and bend them to the shape of your back. Other packs have factory bent stays. Our research shows that people’s backs are unique, and aluminum stays need to be custom shaped for maximum comfort.

Comments
If you are carrying heavy loads, or have a cranky back, consider the Alpamayo Ultra. It has the Load Transfer Rod Suspension System. If you need a larger volume pack, consider the Ouimet.
