Designed to carry bulky, awkward items that do not fit in a pack.
Made in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada
The pack board concept has been around for decades with explorers and hunters making do with stripped down external frames or tumps. The Ostrom Pack Board is designed to carry awkward, bulky items that don't fit any conventional pack. E.g. a Pelican case for a laptop satellite system, boat motor, video equipment, batteries, wild game.
Gear is secured by webbing straps with quick release buckles. To secure the load further, use rope or bungi cords (not supplied).
Features
There is a rigid panel that extends out 6" from the bottom for the load to rest on
2 vertical webbing straps and quick release buckles
5 horizontal webbing straps and quick release buckles
All straps are removable so they can be repositioned
Metal d-rings around the edge of the packboard allow ropes and bungi cords to be attached
Materials and Construction
1000 Denier Cordura Plus
National Moulding buckles (toughest on the market) and metal D-rings
EVA foam(high quality dense foam does not compress over time) and ether foam (soft and cushy) in shoulder straps
All stress points are sewn multiple times or bar-tacked
All seams and raw edges are bound so the fabric won't fray over time
Suspension System - Internal Frame
A rigid plastic framesheet / back panel with 2 parallel aluminum stays (a flat bar that is 1" wide and 1/8" thick, that runs the length of the back panel) ("One size fits most" - To accommodate different back lengths, the stabilizer straps that extend from the shoulder straps to the top of the pack have two attachment points on the frame.)
Stays can be removed and bent to the shape of your back for a custom fit
S-shaped shoulder straps with adjustable chest strap (5 sizes); they are 3/4" thick, two layers with a dense EVA top layer that prevents the pack from digging into your shoulders.
Soft Padded Hip Belt (4 sizes) - 3/4" thick
Stabilizer straps on shoulder straps and hip belt provide adjustment and pull the load closer to your back and hips so the pack moves with you.
Fleece lined tump
Notes from the Field
Bill Ostrom does custom design work, and modified the Ostrom Pack Board for Gary and Joanie McGuffin to carry a large Pelican box on their Ancient Forest Journey expedition.
"Without the amazing harness system designed by Bill Ostrom to carry this 45kg (99 pound) load, we simply would not have been able to carry the equipment which enabled us to write newspaper articles, keep in touch with CBC Radio and keep a website en route." Gary and Joanie McGuffin, Ancient Forest Journey, 1997
